Plant Markers:
How to Make Them, Part One

Step 1:  Line up your tile and accent(s) until you come up with a pleasing arrangement. It is easier to write on the tile before making the marker because you can lay it flat. If you make a mistake, you can erase the paint pen with a little nail polish remover on a cotton swab. A no-acetone type works just fine.

Step 2:  Turn the large tile to the back.  It is easier to leave the wire on the reel (or in the roll) and pull out as much as you need without cutting it until you have to.  This cuts down on miscalculations and waste.  Pull the end of the wire over the back of the tile, leaving about three inches of the end hanging off for tying around the branch later.  Hold the wire in place with your thumb.

Step 3:  Wrap the end of the wire still connected to the reel around a corner of the tile.

Step Four:  Continue wrapping to form a figure eight on the back of the tile.  Be sure to lay your wire carefully on the front for a nice result.  For example, you may do the second layer to the inside of the tile from the first.  For a large tile, three layers are good, as shown.  For smaller tiles, two are sufficient.  Cut the wire, leaving three or four inches for hanging.

Steps 5 & 6:  Lever the end of the small screwdriver under the wrapped wires to make a space, and pass the new end underneath them.  Twist the two wires together tightly to secure.
